Our Story Begins Here
❊ About Us
"When women thrive,
communities thrive."
RAW (Resilient Aspiring Women) is a grassroots, community-based organisation in Brighton, Melbourne. We nurture a vibrant environment that celebrates women and cross-cultural connections through nature, art, food, gardening, sharing stories, and creative group work.
Our story
In 2012, an idealistic collaboration between Mariam Issa, from Somalia, and Ina Kons, from Germany, gave life to the RAW Garden. What started as a shared belief in the power of connection, women, and diversity has since blossomed through the dedication of many volunteers.
For more than twelve years, RAW has been one of very few community organisations fostering this kind of connection. We have welcomed newly arrived migrants and refugees, holding healing circles, cross-cultural conversations, storytelling, educational programs, gardening, crafting, and cooking. Together these have formed a space to learn from each other, heal, and grow.
RAW is powered entirely by volunteers. From our committee to our gardeners, everyone here gives their time freely. It is that generosity, shared skills, willing hands, and open hearts, that keeps our garden and our community growing.
Why it matters
Thousands of people arrive in Victoria each year seeking safety and a new beginning. Between 4,000 and 6,000 refugees settle here annually, while many thousands more navigate the long path to permanent residency. Most arrive feeling profoundly alone.
Our founder Mariam understands this journey firsthand. She arrived in Melbourne in 1998 and recognised a powerful need: to bridge the gap between newcomers and the wider community. RAW helps new arrivals feel less isolated, connects them to networks and support, and gives them the tools and confidence to thrive. This support reaches beyond the individual and enriches the whole community.
